Hale County Animal Shelter20 Correction Dr, Greensboro, AL 36744
334-624-8120
Hale County Animal Shelter is operated by the nonprofit Friends of Hale County Animal Shelter with $29,000/year of funding from Hale County, according to former director Laurie Nevin. The shelter is now directed by Autumn Harrison.
Hale County Animal Shelter houses stray animals. Owner surrenders are accepted only if the owner dies or moves into a nursing home.
- Stray Hold is 7 days.
- Spay/Neuter is performed on all 6-month or older animals prior to release to the adopter. If the animal is too young, the adopter is given a certificate for free sterilization and rabies shot.
- Animal Census Reports are prepared monthly and submitted to the board of directors.
Because Hale County is bordered by Greene County and Perry County, neither of which have a shelter, residents of those counties often call Hale County Animal Shelter asking for help that cannot be provided.
Animal Control in Hale County
Hale County has no dedicated animal control. If there is a call about an emergency situation, a shelter employee will go out but only if a deputy is present. For assistance, contact Hale County Sheriff’s Office at 334-624-3081.
If the assistance is needed within municipal limits of Greensboro, Akron, Moundville, or Newbern, you can also request help from the police department or city hall.
If your ACO is unable to help or if your area has no animal services, see this guidance.
Dog Confinement Requirements in Hale County
County Adoption of Alabama’s Dog Confinement Statute: Dog confinement is not required in unincorporated Hale County because the Hale County Commission has not adopted Alabama Code § 3-1-5, which would require that dogs be confined to the owner’s premises or kept in the charge of a responsible person if off-premises. There are still steps you can take to address issues or to encourage the county to require confinement.
Dog Confinement Requirements Within Corporate Limits & Police Jurisdiction:
- Dog confinement is required by ordinance in Moundville (§ 6-102).
- We do not know whether owners are required to confine their dogs in Greensboro, Akron, or Newbern. Please email us if you can share information.
How to Report: See How to Report an At-Large Violation.
Dog Bites
Animal bites should be reported to the Hale County Health Department (the local office of Alabama Department of Public Health) at 205-624-3018. Attend to medical needs first, then report the bite the same day or next business day.
If a dog must be quarantined for rabies observation, the dog goes to Hale County Rabies Officer Dr. James Payne or to Dr. Perry.
